You will need;
- PHOTOBLURBS
- CLASS REGISTER
- PHOTOBLURBS
- CLASS REGISTER
- pen
1. Enter the classroom at about 1.45pm after carpet-time. Spread the PHOTOBLURBS on a suitable area of the carpet. (Don’t let children step on them- they like to slide on them!)
2. Call children in groups of 6 to come and choose a Storysack. The first time they choose a Storysack you will need to explain that they need to look at the photographs carefully, that they can ask you about the story, and that they will take the Story sack home for a week at ‘home-time’. After a week or two many children will be keen to choose their Storysack and will come to the carpet as soon as they see you. Leave children doing painting/sticking or working with teacher/teaching assistant until later when they’ve finished. Once the children in the first class have chosen their sacks move to the carpet in the second class.
You may need to search outside for some children especially in the summer.
3. On the CLASS REGISTER write the title of the Storysack the child has chosen in the column next to their name and put the PHOTOBLURB under the register so that no one else chooses the same sack. If the child has a sack at home already score through the column next to their name to remind you not to give them another one. Sometimes these children will say their parent is bringing the sack at home time, in practise that rarely happens so don’t give in! (If it does happen you could have the parent and child come to the Storysacks admin. cupboard and let them choose a sack).
4. You need to leave the classrooms by 2.45pm at the very latest.
5. Returning to the Storysacks Library Admin Area. Put PHOTOBLURBS not chosen back into PHOTOBLURBS LIBRARY BOX. Put PHOTOBLURBS chosen into PHOTOBLURBS-ON LOAN BOX.
6. Unlock STORYSACKS CUPBOARDS. Using CLASS REGISTER take out each Storysack and line them up, one class down one side of the corridor the other class down the other (lay sacks flat in front of fire equipment doors). Its quicker giving out sacks when they’re in ‘register order’.
7. Referring to the CLASS REGISTER Take out the BORROWERS CARDS for each of the borrowers that week in alphabetical order, and then all STORYSACKS TITLE CARDS being borrowed that week
8. Write the date borrowed on each of the BORROWER CARDS and then return them all to their places in the box.You may well have to finish this job after school.
9. Write the name of the borrower on each of the STORYSACK TITLE CARDS. Put a PAPERCLIP on each of the cards (This indicates at-a-glance the storysack is on loan. Return all the cards to their places in the STORYSACK TITLE CARD BOX.You may well have to finish this job after school.
10. BREAK-TIME take the sacks to the classrooms, arranging them in order around a table or on a clean bit of floor).
11. Go to the classroom at 3.15pm to give out Storysacks. Remind the children not to open the sacks, using the CLASS REGISTER call out their names and hand them their sack.
